My wife and I established ourselves in Cape Town as tour operators in 1999 with a mere R50. Two years later, cash flow constraints forced us to look at banks for financial support for a business trip to a Scandinavian trade show.

Standard Bank assisted us with an overdraft to finance our travel. We went on to secure a niche opportunity, which has resulted in Eternity Adventures facilitating a steady stream of 1200 Scandinavian seasonal tourists to South Africa.

I believe that it was the relationship of trust with our Standard Bank manager and the manager’s commitment to help us that secured our much-needed overdraft, which then gave us the opportunity to take our business to the next level.

Upon the advice of our Standard Bank business banker, our business also benefited from the convenience of Banking Online as well as the reduced costs associated with electronic transactions.

As a provider of ground logistics and a novel approach towards tours, our company has enjoyed phenomenal growth since the trade fair in Scandinavia and according to SA Tourism, every five tourist visiting South Africa results in the creation of one job, so we’re delighted to be making a difference.

We provide a holistic service for our clients, one of which is a major Scandinavian owned travel company. We facilitate all aspects of inbound logistics for the many groups they send to us, including looking after their tour leaders and supplying bus drivers.

We believe our hands-on, niche approach has contributed to the company’s success.
We do more than just a coach tour. We don’t just take clients to Cape Point, but we take them to Olifants Bos on the Atlantic side and every person is encouraged to become a part of a beach cleanup along the way, collecting plastic bottles. People then become part of an experience that they will remember for a long time and it’s this ‘experiential’ niche that sets us apart.

By setting an example, we are keen to revolutionize tourism in South Africa and our vision of promoting zero-carbon foot print tours - where tourists get to cycle, walk and sail in favour of tour bus transport - are gaining popularity. Ideally, we’re aiming to move tourists without a coach, and we’re keen to get as much support from other agents as possible.

Currently, we are also trying to champion the use of 5 litre containers of filtered water as opposed to the current tourists’ choice of small bottled water – a prime littering threat.
It’s an idea that we want others to copy, for the benefit of tourism and our country.

Sharing the success of Eternity Adventure, our tips for other entrepreneurs keen on making a success of their small business include the following:
  • Find a niche market and whatever you choose, make sure you become the best
  • Turnover is vanity and cash flow is reality – keep your overheads as low as possible. Work from home if you can and if your business allows this
  • Balance your family and your business needs. Don’t sacrifice the values you hold special. Live your life but don’t give it away
  • Do unto others in business what you want others to do unto you: Treat others well and be humble

For nine years I learnt the art of growing tree saplings while working for a leading paper supplier. My knowledge of seed germination and treatment, to the hardening of tiny plants into sturdy saplings ready for the field, created an opportunity for me to become a supplier to the paper giant. I hesitated at first because although I knew how to grow trees, I didn't know much about running a business.

Seven years later, I haven't looked back. From an initial 22 workers in 2002, today I employ 120 staff and produce 9 million seedlings and 1,1 million cloned saplings per year.

Over the years, I have grown my business as carefully as the saplings that I nurture.
I am cautious and diligent about doing things the right way. From the start I have welcomed professional financial advice from my banker at Standard Bank. I am not scared to embrace the convenience and cost-savings that electronic banking offers, and I have moved from weekly cash envelopes for each worker to opening Mzansi bank accounts for every employee. Business online has freed up valuable business time. Today it takes me 15 minutes to pay my staff and I don't have to worry about the risk of cash on site. I use a range of banking products; a business banking account, a Corporate card to pay suppliers, vehicle finance for my transport requirements, retirement annuities and estate planning.

I am conservative to the core and I believe that my cash flow is the lifeblood of my company. The money I make is for the business; to grow the business; to maintain equipment and pay workers, because without my workers or proper equipment I have no business. I am also passionate about investing in my workers, and have onsite training sessions to ensure they have the necessary knowledge to maintain sapling output.

My advice to other budding entrepreneurs is to make your business make money. But, don't think the money is yours - it's to grow the business. Draw a small salary and don't mix business and personal finances. Don't rush the good things - leave the flashy cars for much later for when you can truly afford them. Much of my success has been inspired by entrepreneur and mining magnate, Patrice Motsepe. I used to tell my wife that I want to be successful, just like Motsepe. Although I'm not educated, I know I can achieve this.

I had two taxis, which were financed by Standard Bank in 1986. This marked the start of a long and successful journey for me as I progressively inched my income upwards.

My taxi investment was followed by a restaurant established in my local village in Limpopo, and in time I sold this business and purchased a four ton truck to distribute fruit and vegetables. Keen on starting my own road works and construction business, I sold the taxis and truck to free up valuable capital.

In 1998 my company was recognized as the first Black owned company in Limpopo to win a R5 million road tender. Today, my thriving business is one of the most successful private construction companies in Limpopo and I employ 110 people from the local community.

During my varied and increasingly profitable business dealings, Standard Bank stood by me. My Business banker advised me on a Savings account, where I was able to save up and accumulate capital for that rainy day. As my business grew, so did my banking needs and the financial advisor helped me by giving me the right product at the right time. I got a business current account which allowed me to monitor and manage my business income expenses diligently and a Corporate card for when I needed to make those urgent purchases.

Most recently I purchased assets including two large tipper trucks, valued at R5 million each. Again, I financed these through Standard Bank's Vehicle and Asset Finance, thus enabling my business to keep up with contracting demands.

My dreams for a bigger company have grown with time and today I have my sights set firmly on becoming as large as some of the JSE listed construction company greats. I believe I have the potential - I have the right people, the right skills and mostly, I believe that the recipe for success is pure hard work. I am on site every day, I get personally involved in all our jobs - I know what is going on in my company and this has helped us grow.

Management expertise is an important consideration for me. My two recently graduated children are both involved in the construction industry, with the objective of learning from the construction giants, so that when they join the family business, they bring with them valuable experience and skills.

Over the years, my knowledge of business has grown and I have learnt many valuable lessons. The advice I would give to fellow entrepreneurs is that apart from pure hard work, it pays to keep business income separate from personal income. Know what's going on in your business and have a good relationship with your bank.
